Serial: A History of Astronomy
A journalistic serial is a form of long-form writing that explores a subject in detail and tells its story engagingly, usually through a sequence of articles published in installments.
Unlike a standard news report, which briefly answers who, what, where, when and why, a serial gives its author room to research a subject more deeply, explain its setting and present events, people and the relationships between them.
Defining features of a journalistic serial
- Published in installments – a broad subject is covered through several connected articles.
- Documentary basis – it draws on facts, historical sources, documents, testimony and research.
- Narrative style – the writing engages readers, sometimes using techniques associated with literature.
- Detailed treatment – it explains context, causes, consequences and notable details as well as facts.
- Authorial voice – it allows more stylistic freedom than a news report while preserving factual accuracy.
